Gong baths are a powerful form of sound healing that bring the body and mind into a state of deep relaxation.
Through the vibrations of the gongs and other instruments, you are immersed in waves of soothing sound. The experience is deeply relaxing, as sound ‘washes’ over you, mind and body.
Sessions are calming for the nervous system as the waves of sound from the gongs move through your body, helping to dissipate tension, stress and overwhelm.
Many leave feeling a renewed sense of clarity and peacefulness, as the stress of modern day life has been relieved.
Here at Little Yoga Studio, I run regular gong bath events in and around Chelmsford, Essex. Each session is a nourishing, relaxing opportunity to help you unwind from modern life, reconnect to your self and let go of what is no longer serving you.
In a gong bath, you can expect to lie down – or sit in a chair – comfortably around the gongs.
The session begins with an introduction and meditation to help you relax and settle before the gongs begin.
You will then be bathed in the vibrations of the gongs and other sound instruments, such as bowls and chimes. Each instrument bringing a unique sound, vibration and resonance to help you unwind and let go.
Gong baths typically last for 45 minutes to an hour. During the session, it is totally normal to feel a variety of emotions and sensations – from deep relaxation, to creative visualisations, to waves of emotions. All are welcome and valid.
At the end of the gong bath, there is the sacred silence – the Shunyata. This can be a moment of real peace and clarity as the vibrations of the gongs settle.
Many leave feeling a renewed sense of clarity, rested and as though the stress of modern day life has been eased.
Gong baths are a form of sound therapy that help us bring the body and mind back into a state of ease.
The deep, layered tones of the gongs create vibrations that move through the body and stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system – our rest and repair state. This helps the body shift into a state where healing and repair are supported.
When we listen to the the deep, resonant sounds of the gongs, our brain activity also shifts into slower wave patterns – theta and delta waves – similar to what happens in meditation or restful sleep. This feels deeply relaxing and rejuvenating.
Many experience these theta and delta brain waves during a gong bath, which feel like drifting into a dream-like meditation.
As the gong plays in waves—sometimes soft, sometimes more dynamic— your body responds intuitively. Some people feel energy shift, others simply rest deeply. There’s no right way to experience it.
Each gong bath is a unique experience. Many will come away feeling deeply relaxed and at ease. Gong baths can bring other feelings or emotions to the surface; it is best to be open to the experience and have no expectations.
Please note there are some contraindications for gong baths. If you are pregnant, have tinnitus, a hearing aid, epilepsy or any concerns at all, please contact Nicola beforehand. All will receive a sound healing health questionnaire prior to your gong bath.
As a yoga teacher and EFT practitioner, I’m drawn to practices that help bring us relieve burnout, tension and overwhelm.
Having experienced many transformative gong baths, I have felt first-hand the power sound can have in helping us unwind, relax deeply and shift our awareness.
Sound can be a wonderfully accessible form of meditation. Allowing you to step outside of busy thoughts and maybe overwhelm and feel in towards your body and the experience.
I offer gong baths at select, restful locations aroound Chelmsford, Colchester, Castle Hedingham and Kelvedon, Essex.
Often, a gong bath will be part of my singature workshop, ‘Rest Club.’ These are mini retreats dedicated to slowing down. Together, we explore slow yoga, along with a gong bath.
